I'm in the middle of swatching now - I've tried 3.5mm, 3.25mm, 2.75mm and I'm waiting to get 3mm from the postie, no idea which one to choose but I did practice the beaded cast on and love the look.
I didn't swatch for this either, but that's only because I've used my yarn and needle combination on another project, so I knew how they'd look together.
I did, however swatch for Hanami #2 (all cherry blossoms version with a kid mohair/silk blend.)
Don't worry - the knitting goddesses won't confiscate your materials if you decide not to! ;)
I did a swatch of stockinette (then ripped it out) ONLY because I tend to knit loosely and wanted to make sure that using 3's with Sea Silk would look OK. But in general I find that swatches lie and really don't save me lots of time, as every pattern would have you believe.
Much as I hate doing it I swatched for this project. I've never used the yarn before and had no idea what it would look like. I didn't like the look with 3mm or 3.5mm needles so I've decide to go with 3.75mm but haven't bothered to swatch on those!
I'm swatching right now! I'm finishing up the swatch because I want to get some straight needles this afternoon and I want to know what size to buy (I usually use circs but I decided that straights would be a good choice for this). I wasn't too crazy about the size 3s so I changed to 2s, but I may change my mind after blocking, of course...
I didn't swatch for this project, but I did receive a sample of the Zephyr wool silk from Sarah's Yarns a few weeks ago and used my 3.25mm needles and knitted it up. I like the fabric I got and will probably just cast on using that size with the Zephyr in Cassis color that arrived last week. I'm going to cast on tomorrow or Friday, I have a pair of socks that I'm just about finished with and want to have fewer WPI's before I get started.
I did swatch, but minimally. I think I cast on 30 stitches, knitted a couple of inches, and did a yo, k2tog every now and then to see how I liked the contrast. Since I'm doing the blossom-only version, that's all I think I need to do.

erm, i so did not swatch.
I didn't swatch for THIS stole, but I'm using the same yarn/beads/needle as I used for MS3, and I DID swatch that, just to make sure I liked the look.

Nope. Me no swatch.
swatch? What is that? (joking - I hate swatching and rarely do - and yes I have paid for it)

I'm going to do a mini-swatch because I'm using a new yarn

I have never used my yarn before so I intend to swatch.
But no, I haven't done it yet. I did wind my yarn this morning though!
Nope, no swatch. Am using same materials as MS3, but didn't swatch that either.

Nope, not going to swatch - it's a shawl! As Kristina said, if I hate the needle size I choose, I'll tear it out and start again.
Happy KAL! Vicky in Denver
